WHT Training

Cadets at all levels in the ATC have had the opportunity to participate in Rifle Shooting, since the Air Cadets was formed in 1941, wich is probably why it is one of the most popular activates amongst cadets still today.  Cadets initially shoot the .22 rifle on a 25m range, however, after more advanced training cadets shoot on ranges up to 100m and have can also learn to shoot the L98 training rifle too.

Safety and discipline are paramount when cadets are shooting.  All cadets have to pass a .22  Weapon’s Handling Test as part of their First Class training, this ensures that they have a basic working knowledge of the Rifle, can understand Range Drills and are properly safety trained.  All the supervising staff that train the cadets in weapons and run ranges are fully qualified within the ATC.

Initially cadets will be concentrating on becoming familiar with the weapon; but once they have developed the skills needed to hit a target accurately and consistently they can progress to the sport of target shooting known as Marksmanship.  There are a number of Marksmanship Badges that can be gained and shown on a cadet’s uniform.  These are as follows:

  • Squadron Marksman
  • Wing Marksman
  • Region Marksman
  • Corps Marksman
